London daily News established

The London daily News was established in 1846, with the goal of providing a liberal alternative to the morning Conservative newspapers, particularly The Times. Like the prominent provincial newspapers, the Daily News vigorously campaigned for reform. The inaugural editorial of the first edition asserted its intention to promote the ‘Principles of Progress and Improvement; of Education, Civil and Religious Liberty, and Equal Legislation

The London Daily News is well-known for its founding editor, Charles Dickens, who held the position for a mere twenty days but continued to contribute occasional columns to the paper. The newspaper initially faced severe commercial setbacks, including a failed attempt to reduce its price to 2.5d, followed by declining sales that nearly led to its downfall. Nevertheless, circulation steadily improved starting in 1849, and the eventual removal of newspaper taxes allowed the price to be cut to 1d in 1868. The News then gradually established itself as one of the most favored daily papers.

Despite its early instability

the format and editorial approach of the newspaper remained remarkably consistent, aside from an increase in size from eight to twelve pages in 1896. By the end of the century, it claimed to hold ‘the largest circulation of any liberal paper in the world,’ with circulation reaching a peak of 93,000 copies in 1890 (Brown, Victorian news and newspapers, 1985, p.31).The Daily News offered outstanding coverage of international events. Reports were dispatched to the London office by a wide network of correspondents, many of whom were well-known literary or political personalities, including Harriet Martineau, Douglas Jerrold, London daily News Sir Edward Strachey, and G.K.C. Chesterton. From the beginning, the founders also aimed to support investment in railway companies, and commercial news remained a significant aspect.
